During hot summer nights, Gohar likes to go on the rooftop of her house. Up there, she listens to the symphony of Isfahan, while observing the curvaceous skyline. She lies on a red carpet, watching the sunset. She can feel the coolness of the night, smell the dried odor of the dirt floor mixed with the suave perfume of the fruit trees. From the rooftop, Gohar feels like she can embrace the city’s vastness through her senses.
On the balustrade along the roof, Gohar has put a small vase collection which once belonged to a great-aunt, a mysterious and reticent woman. Often, she wonders about the vases’ origins. At nightfall she puts orange candles in the vases’ necks, their glow illuminating the wooden pearls. The makeshift candle-holders mimic the city’s landscape, between domes and arches.
